The Raconteurs Retro Site

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I heard the Raconteurs song Level from their album Broken Boy Soldier today on Pandora. The song was good, but when I checked the site, that’s when the name Raconteurs really stuck in my head.

The site is designed to look like an old computer screen and it only accepts keyboard input. Brilliant.

Often, sites are either pretty, functional, or creative. In this case, the designer managed to capture all three.

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

Friday, February 13th, 2009

I highly recommend Power of One by Bryce Courtenay as a refreshing and inspiring read.

Its the story of a boy growing up in South Africa in the mid 1900s around the time of World War II. The boy goes through some traumatizing experiences followed by a load of adventures. The story is partially autobiographical. Once you get past the traumatizing beginning there is plenty of interesting adventures to follow.

The author conveys some messages about the role of the white man in apartheid South Africa, but mostly its just a fun and exciting read. Enjoy and let me know what you think of it.

Gmail Whitelist

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

For a while I have been trying to figure out how to white-list an email address in Gmail. turns out it is really straightforward.

I am not sure if this is new or not, but it seemed like something that could be useful to most anyone that uses Gmail.

The reason I was looking for a whitelist solution was because all of my Google Calendar Email Reminders were gonig to my spambox for some reason. That is pretty frustrating, since I actually depend on them for my scheduling. Everyday I would have to go into the Spam box and click Not Spam – pain in the butt.

Here is how its done:

Step 1: Turn on your computer. (Probably already done)

Step 2: Load a browser. (Probably got this one covered already)

Step 3: Load your Gmail account. (Okay… enough messing around lets get to it).

Step 4: Click “Create a Filter” next to the search box at the top of the Gmail window.

Step 5: In the From field, enter the Email address you wish to white-list and click Next.

Step 6: Put a check in the check box next to “” and click Create Filter.

Alright… So its only two easy steps. Good luck. Hope this helps.

This a brilliant collection of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons about snow art. Really shows you the brilliance and creativity of Bill Watterson.

Retarded Oxy Clean Guy

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Every time an Oxy Clean commercial comes on TV, I turn to a different channel. Its too loud. The guy sounds retarded. And I left off the quotes intentionally. I literally mean he sounds like a retarded person with a low IQ who has no volume control. Or maybe he is insane. Thats possible, too. Now, I’m not being mean here. I just find it offensive that this company, Oxy Clean, thinks its funny to use retarded people to sell their products.

The company must be doing at least alright, because the company doesn’t go out of business. Unfortunately, I, and other sane people of normal IQs, don’t get to see the commercials that show after the Oxy Clean commercials, because we change channels when the Oxy Clean commercials come on. So, to all the networks that show these commercials, and to all the advertisers that advertise after the Oxy Clean commercial, STOP SHOWING THE LOUD RETARDED INSANE GUY on my television.

I feel bad that I am giving Oxy Clean a free promotion, but this had to be said.

And oh yeah… Lets not forget that he is ruining the image of all bearded men.

… Heeeeeerrrresss BILLY!
