Much Respect for Google

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Two years later and I think my letter still applies:

Here is someone else who sees Google in the same light:

Keep up the good work, Google. People aren’t scared of you. They are scared that you will become something bad. All we ask is that you don’t lose your identity as the thinker and innovator.

Longer Battery Life?

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Here’s a novel idea. Rather than making batteries last longer, make devices use less battery power.

Make a screen for a laptop that is transreflective, so it isn’t using battery power for the screen:

T-Mobile G1 & Google Reader

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I think we are all still shocked that there isn’t a simple application on the G1 for reading RSS feeds. I don’t want to rely on a constant internet connection to read the news. I want to be able to download feeds and read them when I’m sitting in a steel box lined with 6 feet of lead.

With that said, I do have an internet connection with this device about 95% of the day, whether its a wifi connection or just 3G.

Check out Google Reader.
So I settled on a simple solution for reading my Google Reader account on my G1…

Step 1) Bookmark the Google Reader page in the browser.

Step 2) Long-press on your home screen (desktop) and add a shortcut of type Bookmark.

You now have Google Reader on your T-Mobile G1.

And you won’t regret it. You can easily add feeds by simply clicking the Add Subsciption button and entering words resembling the name of feed you want. (I have had minor problems adding feeds. It occassionally closes the browser, but its just as easy to add feeds on a PC.)

Reading the feeds is a pleasure, because the Google Reader site is designed for mobile. It shows the headings of a group of feeds at a time. Clicking on a heading very quickly opens up the feed blurb. If you want to read the entire article, just click on a link to jump to the site. And to top it all… Google Reader reformats the site for your G1. (Sometimes the reformatting process is a little slow and the outcome is not perfect, but the article is always in there somwhere in a mobile device format.)
